When a hard drive runs out of free space, we usually start looking through folders, trying to spot large amounts of data we don't need. While there are more efficient methods of clearing some disk space, WhatSize can help you locate large chunks of data much faster. It provides several view modes for your files and folders, which make it quite easy to spot the largest files in a folder. Additionally, the application provides you with a few tools for cleaning up the hard drive.

The user interface resembles a standard Finder window and you can set it to columns, outline or table viewing mode. Files and folders are color coded, according to their size. You will see an item colored differently if its size is measured in Gigabytes, Megabytes or Kilobytes.

The pie chart is the most effective viewing mode, if you wish to figure out which files take up the most space in a specific folder. Files and folders are displayed as larger or smaller chunks of a pie chart, according to their size. The actual files are listed next to the pie chart and you can hover with the mouse cursor over a file or folder to highlight its corresponding chunk of the pie chart.

Besides helping you find large amounts of data, the application can also help you clear up some disk space. It comes with a built-in disk cleaner and a duplicate finder, which you can use to remove temporary files and other junk data and to locate and remove duplicate files.

Pros

The application can show you the largest and smallest bits of data in a specific pool. It color codes files and folders according to their size and it also displays them in a pie chart. What's more, WhatSize comes with built-in cleanup tools.

Cons

The cleanup tools are not functional in the trial version. If you need to figure out which files take up the most disk space, WhatSize will draw you a clear and easy to understand picture.
